Key IPSK Milestones

Over the years, the Intersex Persons Society of Kenya (IPSK) has achieved significant milestones in advocating for the rights of intersex persons in Kenya. These accomplishments have firmly established IPSK as the leading organization on intersex issues, gaining recognition from both local and international stakeholders, including state and non-state actors.

IPSK Over the Years

2016

  • Formation of IPSK: The society was established as a key organization advocating for intersex rights in Kenya.
  • Parliamentary Petition: Submitted a petition to Parliament to protect the rights of intersex persons.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Partnered with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and the Support Initiative for People with Atypical Sex Development (SIPD) in Uganda.
  • Regional Advocacy: Participated in a two-week exchange program at SIPD-Uganda and represented at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACPHR) in Banjul, The Gambia.
IPSK Gazetted as a Member of the Intersex Persons Implementation Coordination Committee (IPICC) in April 2019: Spearheading the implementation of 27 key recommendations from the Intersex Taskforce.

2018

  • Taskforce Involvement: Co-opted as a member and participated in the development and launch of the Taskforce on Policy, Legal, Institutional, and Administrative Reforms regarding Intersex Persons in Kenya.
  • Official Recognition: Registered as the first formal intersex organization in Kenya and secured a KRA PIN certificate and bank accounts.
  • Intersex Awareness: Participated in the first and subsequent Intersex Awareness Day events in Nairobi and Embu Counties.
IPSK played a crucial role in lobbying for and implementing the historic enumeration of intersex persons in Kenya on August 24th/25th, 2019, introducing the third sex marker 'I'. This milestone was part of the broader efforts led by the Intersex Persons Implementation Coordination Committee (IPICC), established by the Attorney General.

  • IPSK Gazettement: Gazetted as a member of the Intersex Persons Implementation Coordination Committee (IPICC) to implement the recommendations of the Intersex Taskforce.
  • Historic Census: Successfully lobbied for the inclusion of intersex persons in Kenya’s national census, introducing the third sex marker ‘I’ on August 24-25.
  • African Intersex Movement: Hosted the African Intersex Movement Conference in Kenya and collaborated with the University of Pretoria, South Africa, on regional intersex research.

  • Legislative Advocacy: Introduced an amendment bill to the Registration of Persons Act through Hon. Isaac Mwaura, which passed its first and second readings.
  • Reproductive Health Bill: Contributed to the Reproductive Health Care Bill, advocating for provisions on intersex persons’ access to reproductive technology and adoption.
  • Board Formation: Established the IPSK Board of Directors.

  • Strategic Planning: Launched the first IPSK Strategic Plan to guide the organization’s future activities.
National Reproductive Health Policy 2022-2032: A comprehensive framework advancing reproductive rights and inclusivity for all, including intersex persons in Kenya.

 

2022

  • Children’s Act 2022: Played a key role in the enactment of the Children’s Act, signed by the President, which includes protections for intersex children.
  • Public Office Representation: Dr. Dennis Wamalwa became the first intersex Kenyan to occupy a high-ranking public office.
  • National Reproductive Health Policy 2022-2032: Contributed to the development of the National Reproductive Health Policy, ensuring inclusion of intersex issues.

2023 & 2024

  • Intersex Persons Bill: Continued legislative efforts, with the introduction of the Intersex Persons Bill in January 2024.
